Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet aren’t your average couple, even by Hollywood standards. The couple has been going strong for over a decade, and has finally tied the knot in 2017, but don’t let that traditional setting fool you.
The first untraditional thing about the couple is their age difference: Bonet is 12 years older than Momoa. We’re all for it, of course. Nothing should come between two people that love each other, especially not something as meaningless as age.
But that’s just the beginning of the off-beat, if somewhat quirky, nature of their relationship. Read more to find out what makes them such a unique power couple.
Jason Mamoa was born in 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The actor’s first steps in show business was as a fashion model in Hawaii. He later played in TV shows such as Baywatch Hawaii and Stargate: Atlantis, but his big break came much later, when he was cast as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. After his first big break he was cast as the lead in Aquaman and achieved stardom.
Lisa Bonet, on the other hand, was already a huge star when the two met. Born in 1967 in San Francisco, Bonet became a household name when she played Denise Huxtable in The Cosby Show back in the 80’s.
This isn’t Bonet’s first marriage either. Back in 1987 she married her first husband, singer Lenny Kravitz, and in 1988 the two had a daughter together, Zoë Isabella Kravitz. Momoa was only 11 at the time.
But what brought Momoa and Bonet together?
Written in the Stars
It’s always interesting to learn how a Hollywood couple first met, especially when they come from such different backgrounds as Momoa and Bonet.
But their love story had begun long before they actually met, as Momoa confessed on The Late Show with Jame Cordan. The little 8-year-old Momoa was watching The Cosby Show with his mother when he saw Bonet for the first time and fell madly in love with her, or at least with her character. As he later recalled, he turned to his mother and said: “Mommy, I want that one”.
So it seems that Bonet was one of Momoa’s first celebrity crushes, but we all have those – so how did he go from crushing on a TV character to marrying the actress who played her decades later?
Love At First Sight
Momoa was only a child when The Cosby Show aired and he wouldn’t meet Bonet for decades to come, but his feelings toward her were no joke.
He told James Cordan that when he saw Bonet on screen he said: “I’m going to stalk you for the rest of my life, and I’m going to get you.” It may sound a little creepy, but you have to remember that he was just a kid back then. He had no way to express how intense his feelings were.
Of course, today he realizes just how creepy that sounds, and he reassured the audience that he didn’t tell Bonet that particular story until they were already married with two kids. He jokingly admitted that telling her that story beforehand would have been “creepy and weird”.
So how did the two actually meet?
Momoa was very serious about Bonet as a child but as he grew up he realized meeting her was next to impossible, and so, he moved on with his life. That made their first encounter all the more shocking.
As he told Cordan, years later he was at a Jazz club with two friends of him that happened to also be friends with Bonet. Not only that, but Bonet also happened to be at the same Jazz club!
When they met, Momoa played it cool, but then, when Bonet wasn’t looking, he turned to his friends, waved his hands in the air and silently screamed “like a little girl.” As shocking as this first meeting was for him, Momoa kept it together and somehow “convinced her to take (him) home”, as he was staying at a hotel at the time.
They made a stop along the way at a café, to grab a Guinness for Bonet and grits for Momoa. Such a casual first meeting – who knew they’d hit it off?
The Things We Do for Love
Momoa adored Bonet from the start, and showed it in every way possible. Even his dreadlocks, that are now a huge part of his iconic look, were inspired by Bonet. As he told Cordan: “I actually dreaded my hair almost for her. I had huge dreadlocks, and she had dreadlocks”.
But although Momoa did the first few moves, their connection grew stronger quickly and rapidly. It seemed that the two were meant for each other, and they had a lot more in common than just hair.
The One Thing That Would Break Them Up
Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet’s love is strong, but every couple has their limits. For Bonet, it’s Momoa’s hair. Momoa told E! News about his wife’s weakness: “My wife would leave me if I cut my hair, so I just don’t cut my hair. I’m not cutting it for a while, I’ll tell you that much.”
It seemed that Momoa’s first move was the right one! Not only did growing his dreads made him and Bonet closer, but Bonet seems to go crazy about his wild, wavy hair.
But their relationship is unique for many other reasons.
A Secret Wedding?
There were a lot of rumors about Momoa and Bonet’s relationship in the first few years, and many thought that the two actually got marred back in 2007, not 2017. We can understand why so many people thought so. The two were in what’s considered to be a “common-law marriage,” sharing a household like a married couple even though they didn’t make it official.
But there were other very good reason to think the two had gotten married. First, Momoa had been referring to Bonet as his “wife” for a decade before they got hitched. And if that’s not confusing enough, they two had been wearing rings on their ring fingers for quite a while before the weeding.
Tying the Knot
Momoa and Bonet decided to tie the knot in 2017, after 12 years together. Being the quirky couple that they are, their idea of a wedding wasn’t what we’d call traditional. Instead of having the huge celebrity wedding everybody had been expecting, they had a secret wedding in their California home.
They didn’t want to make the wedding a huge deal, and instead focused on celebrating their shared love with their closest friends and family.
Momoa was even upset when the news about the wedding leaked to the press. As he told Entertainment Online: “(I) haven’t had the chance to stalk someone down and find them yet — but I will.”
What makes Momoa and Bonet such a cute couple is their unique lifestyle and shared quirks. The two might be famous actors, but they don’t even have a television at home. It was Bonet’s idea, as she wanted their children to use their imaginations rather than be glued to the screen.
Not only does the house not have a single TV, but the two parents make sure to put their phones away when they’re spending time with their kids.
But the family does enjoy one show together. Every Saturday they gather around the single computer screen they have at home to watch Saturday Night Live together. It seems to be working for them. They have plenty other ways to keep busy.
