Michael Strahan told People magazine he was “painted as the bad guy” after he announced earlier this year he was leaving “Live!”
The former New York Giants star recently talked to the magazine about his last weeks on the talk show and what happened with his former co-host, Kelly Ripa.
“I don’t want people to see me as ‘Oh, he just ran out, just left them there.’ That’s just not True.”
Strahan announced in April he was leaving the show after four years to move to “Good Morning America.” Ripa was reportedly told about the move not long before the announcement, which upset her to the point of taking at least one unscheduled day off.
When she returned to work with Strahan for the last few weeks of his more than four-year tenure on the show, she clearly carried a grudge, joking about Strahan’s divorce, his contract, and even his astrological sign, according to the New York Daily News.
“At one point I think we were friends,” Strahan told People. “I don’t know what happened at the end. I learned a lot from her, though.”
He said he and Ripa didn’t talk much during those last few weeks
“Toward the end of it all, we didn’t really communicate that much,” Strahan said. “I kinda looked at it like, ‘It was what it was.’ I come from a business where you have to collaborate. The show was going well? We’re all winning. That’s all that matters to me.”
