Tom Selleck has always remained tight lipped on the subject of his romance with his longtime romantic partner. But something from his past just came up yet again.
Love Strikes Twice
Having been married twice, Tom Selleck has always been fairly private about his personal life. From model Jacqueline Ray to a 30-year marriage to Jillie Mack, today, Selleck has an announcement to share.
Sacrificing For The Family
Most people would never dream of giving up their dream job, but that’s exactly what Tom Selleck did once Hannah was born. “I quit Magnum to have a family,” he said. “It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance.” Tom decided to make a conscious decision to focus on his family, rather than try to juggle work and family. But that’s not all…
Learning From Mistakes
Tom’s first marriage fell apart because of intense pressures from stardom, and he vowed to make sure that it didn’t happen again the second time around. “I’ve found it very difficult to expose my private life and live with it,” Tom said in an interview. “It’s important to nurture your marriage. I think wanting time away from work has been good for that.” He was willing to make the sacrifices of temporarily staying out of the spotlight to focus on family.
“Coffee” With Sophia Loren?
Since Tom was such a heartthrob back in the day, it’s no surprise that his wife Jillie was sometimes concerned about other women trying to steal her man. She became flustered when she found out that bombshell Sophia Loren was their neighbor! Tom explained the circumstances when he was allowed to visit Sophia: “If I was on my way to Home Depot and she was out on the driveway in her bathrobe and she said exactly these words: ‘Thomaso, would you like a cappuccino?”
With fame comes money, and sometimes loads of it. We’ve all heard of rappers and NFL stars who blow through their newfound fortunes almost as quickly as they earned them, but Tom Selleck is a lowkey guy and not interested in keeping up with the Joneses. He’s perfectly content on his ranch with his little family, although he could easily live a flashy and excessive life in front of the flashing bulbs of the paparazzi if he wanted.
Taking A Step Back
Tom is literally salt of the earth – you can find him on any given day doing the dirty work on his farm. His avocado plantation is more than 30 acres, so we’re sure there’s plenty for him to take care of. Tom explained in an interview that he gets restless if he’s sitting inside too long without something productive to do. “So I like to get outside and work on the farm, from fixing roads to clearing brush,” he said.
Tom Selleck isn’t the type to sit back, relax, and take whatever the universe has to often. He’s not exactly a “go with the flow” type of guy, and due to his military background, he’s highly disciplined and not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty. That’s why he works on his marriage. “It’s important to nurture your marriage,” he said. “I think wanting time away from work has been good for that.”
Tom Selleck knows exactly how much of a bankable star he is, and how easily he could come back to his A List status in Hollywood whenever he wants. But Tom has no interest in resuming his previous superstardom. His priorities remain his daughter and wife, and he knows exactly how easy it is to get mixed up when you’re in the spotlight too long. He picks family over fame ,and we definitely don’t see that changing any time soon!
Still Going Strong
In an interview with the New York Daily News, Tom explained how his marriage has lasted so long: “Jillie and I have a pretty good partnership. We don’t do anything or make any decisions without consulting each other,” he said. “And if one of us makes a decision involving Hannah, the other parent completely supports that position, even if you disagree.” Good, solid tips from a man with more than 30 years of wedded bliss under his belt!
Helping Today’s Youth
Tom isn’t the type of guy to stay in his private paradise and look down on the peasants from his ivory tower. He is very concerned about what today’s generation of youngsters are turning out like, so he founded his own charity based off his own personal mission, which he named “Character Counts!” Tom Selleck said, “I work with exceptional kids, gang kids, deprived kids, enriched kids and they all have an astounding sense of entitlement.” Time for a reality check!
Tom Selleck had, by all definitions, an idyllic childhood. So he wants to pay it forward and make sure that the youth of today get exposure to the same proper values that he did while growing up in the 1950s. He was born in Detroit, Michigan to loving and involved parents, who set high standards for their four children. He was raised in the San Fernando Valley in California and has always stayed true to his humble roots.
Tom Of All Trades
Tom was always exceptional, even before he made his name in show business. He studied business administration at the prestigious University Of Southern California, where a basketball scholarship – due to his athletic prowess – paid the way for his studies. He worked as a professional model to earn cash on the side, and from there was introduced to an acting coach who encouraged him to try his luck in the entertainment industry. After graduation, he studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.
Star In The Making
Everything was coming up roses for Tom Selleck at first. Despite never being one to chase fame, stardom seemed to find him easily, and the camera loved him right away. After his success modeling, he impressed agents who came to watch classes at his theater school and he quickly earned gigs in commercials. After an appearance on The Dating Game, Tom was approached by an eager 20th Century Fox executive for a deal. But the tides shifted…
Army Got In The Way
In 1967, the Vietnam war was raging, and Tom Selleck was not able to slip out of the grip of Uncle Sam. He was drafted, and naturally lost his deal at 20th Century Fox. Despite the personal inconvenience, Tom was a patriot ready to serve his country. He said, “I am a veteran, I’m proud of it. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era,” he said. “We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”
Returning To Darkness
Unfortunately for Tom, he didn’t get the hero’s welcome he had hoped for when he finally returned to Hollywood. Show business is a notoriously fickle industry, and some time out of the spotlight quickly rendered Tom irrelevant. Although he expected his studio deal to be waiting for him, the executives cut their losses and quietly ended his contract while he was serving in the army. So Tom Selleck had to start all the way back at square one.
Despite this serious disadvantage, Tom always kept a positive attitude and his fortunes changed yet again. He starred in a grand total of six TV pilots which never got off the ground, until he finally got his big break – the lead role of Thomas Magnum in Magnum P.I. As the show followed the life of an army veteran who pursues private detective work, set in gorgeous Hawaii, it almost seemed like this part was destined for Tom from the start.
But, despite landing the killer part in the show, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Tom from that point on. The show’s writers launched a major strike, which halted production for several weeks, and funding issues led to episodes being delayed for months! Despite the drama, Tom flourished and thrived, earning an Emmy for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series” in 1984. The show was a smash hit and its’ popularity can certainly be credited to Tom’s acting skills.
Magnum P.I. wasn’t just a massive success with audiences that immediately launched Tom Selleck to super star and heart throb status – it was also adored by critics! The show received rave reviews and accolades, earning multiple Emmy and Golden Globes nominations. Tom even won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV-Series – Drama in 1985. Tom’s co-star John Hillerman went on to win an Emmy in 1987 and a Golden Globe in 1982.
Not A One Trick Pony
A lot of TV actors get forever remembered in their one major role, but Tom Selleck has proved time and time again that he has range far outside of the role of Magnum P.I. With guest roles as the much older boyfriend of Monica on Friends, and major parts on Las Vegas and The Closer, Tom has had success and showed his range. Now, starring as Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods, he’s had yet another TV part of a lifetime.
Everyone knows that most Hollywood stars lean towards the liberal end of the political spectrum, but Tom Selleck has always been a maverick who’s not afraid to go his own way. In interviews, he has stated that he identifies as “a registered independent with a lot of libertarian leanings.” In addition to that, he’s a member of the NRA and was not afraid to go head to head with Rosie O’Donnell about his support for the organization while on her show.
One of the things that made Tom Selleck an icon is his signature thick, luxurious mustache, which he still rocks to this day. He’s credited for popularizing the facial hair in the modern era as a symbol of manliness, and his mustache has influenced everyone from Will Ferrell (who rocked some serious upper lip hair as Ron Burgundy n Anchorman) to the character of Ron Swanson, played by the inimitable Nick Offerman, on Parks and Recreation.
Life Imitating Art
They say that art imitates life, and as an actor, it’s always a lot of fun when you’re playing a role that’s basically a better version of your real life self. So Tom Selleck is truly enjoying his current role on Blue Bloods, as the character he plays is a staunch Catholic, just like Tom is in reality. He has stated in a number of interviews that he aspires to be more like his character in day to day life.
Sometimes we learn more about ourselves from others, and Larry Mannetti, who starred alongside Tom Selleck on Magnum P.I., had a lot to say about Tom. Luckily, it was good things. He wrote in his autobiography Aloha Magnum, that Tom Selleck was down to earth, a hard worker, and never a diva on set. Mannetti was also very vocal about Tom’s charitable side, going into detail about philanthropic work that Tom did to help local Hawaiian communities and charities.
Loves The LA Kings
You might not associate La La Land with hardcore performances on ice, but Tom Selleck is obsessed with Los Angeles’ ice hockey team, the LA Kings. He’s a diehard fan, talking in multiple interviews about how much he appreciates his favorite players Anze Kopitar and Alexander Frolov. But it’s not just hockey that Tom loves. He was born in Detroit and never forgets his roots there, so he bought stock in his favorite baseball team, the Detroit Tigers.
We imagine that Tom Selleck would be thrilled to know that his signature series, Magnum P.I., is coming back on air. However, we’re not sure if he cares that his part has been recast, with actor Jay Hernandez to take on the lead role. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, and we hope that Jay isn’t too nervous about it! Judging from his memorable role as Diablo in Suicide Squad, he does have the acting chops to make it.
Like 99% of Hollywood stars, Tom Selleck has had his fair share of box office hits and bombs in the love department. He married model Jacqueline Ray in 1971, then adopted a baby boy with her. Unfortunately, the pair went their separate ways and split in 1982. Appropriately, a year afterwards, he then played the title role in the film “Divorce: A Love Story”, a role which gave him an outlet to express his feelings about his failed marriage.
Perfect Home For Hannah
Rather than settle the family in Beverly Hills or the heart of the action in Hollywood, Tom bought a massive 65 acre ranch far away from the glittering lights of Tinseltown in Ventura County, California. He and his wife thought it was more of a family environment. Tom’s decision to situate the family in a more rural setting seems to have paid off – Hannah Margret has blossomed into a world class equestrian, whose competed in competitions all over the globe.
The massive success of Magnum P.I. wasn’t only a positive thing for Tom Selleck – it was a double edged sword and the success came with a good amount of drawbacks, as well. The stress of his promotional tours certainly must have taken a major toll on his marriage. But career wise, the show wasn’t necessarily the best decision – Magnum P.I.’s producers forced Tom Selleck to pass on the part of a lifetime, Indiana Jones in Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
Everyone Wants A Piece Of Him
There’s just something about Tom Selleck that appeals to everyone, both men and women. He’s a true man’s man, the type of rugged actor more familiar from Old Westerns than modern day pretty boys. He was a major heart throb, with teen girls (and even some older women!) hanging photos of him on their walls. In fact, Tom Selleck was considered so irresistible that he was selected by People magazine in 1998 as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People.
Why Did He Love Cats?
Because he’s known as such a true, old school man’s man, it might seem unusual that Tom Selleck, during a stay in London, became obsessed with the musical Cats. Freshly divorced and across the pond because of filming a movie, the cast took him to the smash hit musical. However, everyone was shocked when Tom kept going back, solo, for repeated viewings of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic. What exactly, or who, was catching Tom’s eye so much?
As you might have guessed by now, there was a gorgeous lady involved in the story. 25 year old Jillie Jean Mack, a dancer and actress, played the lead role of Rumpleteazer in the musical. Tom somehow managed to get introduced to her and immediately asked her out on a date. She accepted the offer and began seeing Tom. Soon, her contract with Cats came to a close and the two finally had a bit more time for each other.
In Love With A Superstar
It might seem crazy to pack your bags and uproot yourself from your home (and everything you know!) for love, but that’s exactly what Jillie Mack did! She decided to take a leap of faith and follow her heart, and left London behind in favor of the sunny skies and palm tree laden beaches of Hawaii, where Tom was filming Magnum P.I. The decision paid off for her, and soon she was accompanying Tom to Hollywood premieres and red carpet events.
Joining The Cast
There was no Magnum P.I. without Tom Selleck. Tom wasn’t naive and understood exactly how much influence he wielded – over the show’s producers and story lines! Because nobody would dare to say no to him and risk upsetting the series’ star, Tom was allowed to assist in casting the show whenever he wanted. He decided to give an opportunity to his love Jillie, and she guest starred as an English girl in a party scene on the episode “Rembrandt’s Girl.”
Despite the fact that Tom Selleck has played both good guys and bad guys (as well as everyone in between), Tom actually has a super strict moral code that he fastidiously abides by. “I try very hard to conduct myself in an ethical way, because that’s important to my stability now,” he said in a recent interview. “We’re a culture that’s so centered on the individual. The culture says that basically nothing is more important than the way you feel.”
Tom was so paranoid about photos of his wedding being leaked that he made sure the official photographer only took Polaroids of the event, as the pictures couldn’t be replicated and no negatives could be sold to the press. The wedding’s officiant, Reverend David Immel, remembered the couple as relatively normal and nervous, like most people about to tie the knot. “He was very concerned that the service be heartfelt, very concerned for her that the service be meaningful.”
Match Made In Secret
Why in the world would you keep one of the happiest days of your life under wraps? Well, if you’re a famous superstar like Tom Selleck, keeping your nuptials quiet is probably one of the few last vestiges of privacy you have in your life. This is why after 5 years together Tom and Jillie ended up tying the knot under aliases (Tom Jenkins and Suzie Mack) in a quick ceremony in Lake Tahoe, California, without the papparazzi knowing.
